WW: Week Six

Humanity

In 2021 there have already been approximately 5.8 million abortions worldwide. As John Stonestreet likes to say, ideas have consequences and bad ideas have victims. Where do these ideas start and how do they lead to abortion?

Carl R. Trueman concludes that “human beings may still like to think they believe in good and bad, but these concepts are unhitched from any transcendent framework and merely reflect personal, emotional, and psychological preferences.

How does this observation and conclusion about current cultural thinking help us understand how some people decide to pursue abortion?

Here are a few verses that provide a transcendent framework for viewing humanity:

Genesis 1:26 “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.””

Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Job 7:17 "What is man, that you make so much of him, and that you set your heart on him,"

Psalm 8:4 "What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?"

Psalm 144:3 "O LORD, what is man that you regard him, or the son of man that you think of him?"

Here is a quote from another person that demonstrates Trueman’s observation. “Everybody has the right to choose their own gender by listening to their own heart and mind,” Laleña Garcia writes in talking to young children about the Guiding Principles of the Movement for Black Lives. “Everyone gets to choose if they are a girl or a boy or both or neither or something else, and no one else gets to choose for them.”

Carl R. Trueman in his book The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self says “that this is only plausible in a world in which the predominant way of thinking comes from a person’s feelings and with the purpose that I choose to create for myself. Human nature becomes something individuals or societies invent for themselves.”

If you believe humanity comes from an Evolutionary process of matter plus time plus chance equals a machine, how would that effect your view of the value of humanity or how you might view abortion?

Romans 1:21-23 “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.”

What do these verses say is inevitable if humans disconnect themselves from God?
